Q. How does the show work?

A. Members of the audience are invited to bring a request with them to the show (although bringing a request isn’t a requirement of being part of the audience!). There will be volunteers collecting and compiling the requests as audience members arrive, so that the performers are kept suitably unaware of them… The performers start on stage and, as requests are played/projected/presented in the space, they create an improvised performance work around each one. There is no prior discussion between the performers, and nothing about the performance is set or choreographed beforehand.

Q. What can I request?

A. Almost anything, as long as the content isn’t obscene, dangerous or damaging to the venue.

Some examples of requests we’ve had previously are:

Music tracks – any genre.

Props – e.g. a puppet, a costume, a stack of old novels, a box of fortune cookies, musical instruments.

Directions – physical instructions, concepts for the dancers to think about while they’re dancing, instructions about the number of dancers on stage at any one time, etc…

Spoken word – e.g. poetry, advertising material, stories.

Images – e.g. photographs, drawings, book illustrations

Q. If I am bringing a request, what time should I arrive at the show?

A. If you could aim to arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time it would assist our volunteers with a smooth request-collecting process!

Q. Do you need to know any details about my request?

A. You don’t need to tell us any details about your request before the show. But if your request is something you did not create yourself please just bring any relevant details (e.g. artist, author, source, etc) with you on the night.

Q. If I have a music request, is there a particular format it needs to be?

A. For ease of collecting requests, we would prefer you to bring your music request on CD if possible. However, we are certainly able to accommodate other formats. Q. Can I request more than one thing?

A. If your request is a combination of things (e.g. an image with a direction, or a prop with a piece of music) that’s fine. But our shows are unfortunately not usually long enough for us to accept more than one discrete unit of request input per person!

Q. Will you use every request you receive?

A. It depends how many we receive on a given show. Our request-collecting volunteers will compile the requests for us, and if we receive many more than we have time to use, they may need to use their discretion about which would make the best combination for a show. We can also combine requests from different audience members (e.g. if you have a prop you would like to be used with someone else’s music request, or an image you are happy to have used with someone else’s direction, etc.). Just let our volunteers know whether you’d prefer your request to be combined or not.

Q. What if I REALLY want you to use my request, and I don’t want to risk just bringing it with me on the day?

A. If you send us an email (travelartdance@gmail.com) including your name, which show you will be coming to and what sort of request you will be bringing – e.g. music, prop, direction etc (but NOT the details of what your request actually is!) we can make sure your request is on a priority list for that show. Also, if you think your request may require any special accommodations for us to be able to use it, please let us know via email in advance.

Back by popular demand, Travel Art Dance Company is excited to announce the return of “Any Requests?” in December 2012! “Any Requests?” is a fun, creative, improvised performance work built entirely around material supplied by the audience at each show. Audience members are invited to bring a request with them to the performance – a piece of music, a prop, an image, a direction, or anything else they would like to see in dance form. Sorry for the recent radio silence! We’ve been busy with a few exciting projects this year (about which we’ll be able to reveal more shortly) But in the meantime, we’d like to say a belated thank you to all of you who came along to winterwarming – it was lovely to share the evening with you, and we were also able to donate $900 to Melbourne Citymission’s Help our Homelessness Appeal.

Our next performance will be as part of Darebin Music Feast next month and we’d love to see you there! More details to follow, but some dates for your diary in the meantime – we’ll be performing on Friday September 21 and Friday October 5 at the Northcote Uniting Church, with the very talented Rachel Samuel (cello), Ant Connelly (sitar, synth and guitar) and Luke Wood (shakuhachi). We’ll be performing several new choreographed works, as well as some completely improvised material and everything in between, and it promises to be an amazing evening of music and dance!

For those of you who’ve been hanging out for them, we’ll also be holding a couple of “Any Requests?” performances before the end of this year, and stay tuned for more Black Rider action in 2013…….

Artistic director of Melbourne’s Travel Art Dance Company, Meah Velik-Lord, sat down with Melbourne freelance journalist Annabel Boyer to talk about her upcoming production, the Black Rider.

Shadowy forests, silver bullets, love and madness, The Black Rider album is a dark fairy-tale, wrapped up in the gristle and bone of Tom Waits’ music and voice. German folklore embedded in everyday American, given a twist that shines on an undercurrent of deeper themes. In just two weeks time Melbourne’s Travel Art Dance Company is set to perform the Black Rider through dance. But it’s been a long road since artistic director, Meah Velik-Lord first came across the album, all the way back in 2003.

“I was working with Tom Waits’ music for another production at the time,” she says, “not with a narrative, but sort of exploring the themes in that piece. The beautiful and the bizarre and the way those two elements really spoke through the music. I picked The Black Rider up in a bookshop, just buying it as an album, not even knowing that the Black Rider was a play or anything like that.”

Already a Waits fan, she immediately loved it, at least most of it. But it wasn’t until she read the short synopsis of the fairy tale, printed  in the album cover that she became aware of the album’s history and it struck her as the perfect material for a dance performance. It was the album as a whole, she says – the artwork, the layout, the lettering and the story, neatly retold in two paragraphs – rather than just the music, that gave flight to her imagination.

“I have to say there are some tracks on it, that are really difficult to listen to, as listening,” says Meah, “but putting them in the context of the story makes it quite a different experience. And that comes through when we are working on it.”

When Tom Waits originally wrote the music it was as a collaboration that harnessed the talents of director Robert Wilson, writer William S. Burroughs, as well as his own, on a musical play. However, he did not sing it for the original play, and only released an album of the songs, singing the songs himself, some time later.  Like so much of Tom Waits’ music, the album ranges widely from gentle romantic ballads to pieces that seem more like machinations from a factory floor.

It has taken seven years since that first glimmer of inspiration for the TADC’s production to become a reality.  And now after beginning work on the production earlier this year, they are just two weeks away from the final performances. The production is entirely made up of originally choreographed and improvised dance, and as far as the company is aware, it is the only production of the Black Rider to be done entirely through dance.

“It is completely different now to what I thought it would be.” Says Meah, “In my head, it was a full staged production with amazing sets and effects, with people dropping in and out of the stage floor and things like that. Now we’re in the Northcote Town Hall, which is a really beautiful venue in its own right, but it does have its limitations. We’ve had to be a lot more creative and in the process of distilling it down, it has become a lot more raw.”

Another major challenge has been to tell a clear narrative while dealing with the fact that some songs from the original play were not included in the album. But Meah says that sticking with the album as a point of inspiration has been a very conscious choice. Elsewhere the performers have dug in to their own collective experiences for inspiration, along with the story. Over the last few years, Travel Art Dance Company has done a lot of work using the themes of collective memory and archetype. The group has been able to draw on this work as they develop the Black Rider with its age-old themes of love and Faustian bargains.

“People have brought in their own cultural heritage, the ideas and stories that people are holding in their heads.” Says Meah, “I think that process has fed in to wanting to do it in a much more human way. Technically, it’s still a dance work, but I would say that it’s become something more like physical storytelling than what audiences might typically think of as “dance” . It is a combination of choreography and improvisation and the real driving force for us has been  having an outward expression for the music and the tale.”
